When Heartsong Homecare Cooperative opened its doors in 2021, it joined a small but growing network of worker-owned homecare co-ops across Washington. Based in Anacortes, Heartsong has been steadily building something meaningful—providing high-quality care to clients across Skagit and Island counties while creating stable, dignified jobs for caregivers.
At the heart of that work is founder and Executive Director Kathie Rivas, whose deep experience in elder care and strong community ties helped shape Heartsong into what it is today: a team of skilled, compassionate caregivers committed to doing things differently.
But like many co-ops, Heartsong didn’t stop at “what is”—they kept asking, what else is needed?
One answer became clear: while many elders rely on family members for care, those caregivers often go without reliable breaks. That gap can lead to burnout, stress, and isolation.
So Heartsong did what co-ops do best—they responded.
In April, they launched Our Hearts Together, an Adult Day Center designed to provide consistent, professional respite care. The center offers a safe, engaging space led by caregivers with advanced training in dementia and Alzheimer’s care—people who know how to redirect challenging behaviors and create meaningful, supportive activities for participants.
For families, it means peace of mind and time to rest. For participants, it means connection and quality care. And for the broader community—especially in areas like Whidbey Island with a growing aging population—it’s a much-needed resource.
This expansion also reflects something bigger: co-ops investing in their own long-term sustainability. By adding a new service and revenue stream, Heartsong is strengthening job stability for its worker-owners in an industry that can often feel unpredictable.
Current hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with plans to expand as community demand grows.
