Cooperatives Build Communities

Next Tuesday, #GivingTuesday and #GiveBigWA combine for a two-day event to support organizations throughout Washington. We hope that you can support our mission to foster community economic development through the cooperative business model.

Cooperatives have always been about community: neighbors working together to meet common needs and solve common problems. In this unprecedented time, people are creating new means of mutual aid and support. For some the project may be saving an existing business, and the jobs that go with it, from closing. For others, it may be rethinking food distribution in a way that engages all the stakeholders. In every case, the cooperative model focuses on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, and solidarity. Building cooperative organizations, however, requires support and assistance and the Northwest Cooperative Development Center exists to help co-ops grow and thrive.

NWCDC works with people across all communities from residents of manufactured home parks (Resident Owned Communities) to in-home caregivers, to fiber producers, to baristas, to consumers. Our efforts provide guidance and education on governance, sound business practices, and value-based decision-making. The common thread among the many projects we have helped over the years are the people at the center of our work who seek a voice in the economy through a democratic and mutually supportive organization. In doing so, they strengthen their communities by creating greater resiliency economically and a stronger connection with their neighbors.

With your help, we can continue to build a cooperative economy in Washington!
